Opera at the H’yarkon Park With Tel-Aviv-Yafo Municipality
Love, lust, jealousy and betrayal in Puccini’s passionate tale of power that corrupts and love that kills. A new grand production of Tosca created especially for the park.
On August 10, the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, in collaboration with the Israeli Opera, will hold the tradition of open concerts at Ganei Yehoshua Park with a new and unique production of the opera Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, one of the most popular operas in the opera repertoire of all time.
16 years since the opening of the La Traviata at Rabin Square in an open production to the public, the uniqueness of these productions and the fact that they are open to the public free of charge allow a wide audience to experience a cultural experience with their entire family.
Ron Huldai, Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo: “Every year I am excited about the opera event in the park where thousands of people, even those who do not usually attend the opera, enjoy a spectacular show from the best repertoire of the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv. Open to the general public and served in a summer and open atmosphere”.
“Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini, premiered in 1900, based on the play “La Tosca” by the French playwright Sardo. The plot takes place in 1800 in Rome and at the center of the plot are repeated attempts by the corrupt police chief, Baron Scarpia, to spend a passionate night of love with the famous opera singer Floria Tosca.
Tosca does not respond to Scarpia’s attempts. When Mario Cuordosi, the political painter and Tosca’s love is arrested, charged with treason and is about to go to the gallows, Scarpia suggests Tosca to save her lover’s life at the cost of one night in his bed.
Tosca accepts the offer after Scarpia promises that he will make sure the execution will be carried out with blank bullets so that Mario’s life will be saved. After he writes to Tosca and Mario a passageway border pass that guarantees their freedom, she murders Scarpia in his office.
Tosca hurries to jail to inform Mario of the alleged execution, but soon discovers that Scarpia deceived her and that the execution was real.
When Scarpia’s policemen discover that Tosca murdered him they pursue her and she jumps to her death from the roof of St. Angelo.
The orchestra will be directed by conductor Yishai Steckler. The production that was created especially for the park, will be directed by Gadi Schechter who directed most of the park’s productions. The Israeli Opera Choir will be conducted by Eitan Schmeisser.
